As a young child, I had a passion for rocks. At fourteen, my uncle, an Anglican Priest, and my grandfather tried to convince me to become an Anglican minister. My response was, “No, I’m going to UBC to become a geologist, and I’m going to work for Cominco mining.” I entered Geology in the fall of 1969, worked for Cominco during the summers of 1972 and 1973, and graduated in 1974. At the end of the 1973 field season, I was asked by my boss to go and work in the mines in Mexico. I had two courses to complete, and I elected to finish my degree first. Unknown to me, I was in for a complete change in career path.
I cannot remember the details of how I was tracked down by a forestry professor who was looking for a research assistant who excelled in aerial photo interpretation. The forestry professor obtained my name from my geography professor. My two highest marks through my entire degree were in photo interpretation. One of my two completion courses was in photo identification of land forms.
In 1975, a new faculty member, a remote sensing specialist, was hired. I became his research assistant, and he needed a teaching assistant. “I have never taught,” I thought. I decided to give it a try with the caveat, “If I do well I’ll keep going. If I do poorly, I’ll never teach again.”
